The good news is that choosing outfits doesn’t have to be stressful. You don’t need to buy an entirely new wardrobe, and you definitely don’t need everyone wearing matching outfits. The goal is simply to choose clothing that keeps the focus where it belongs…on your family, your connection, and the moments you’ll treasure for years to come. Here are my favorite tips for creating timeless, beautiful family photos.
What you wear for your family photography session has a bigger impact than you might think. Here’s how choosing timeless, coordinated outfits helps create natural, emotion-filled photos you’ll love for years.
Stick with Neutrals and Earth Tones
When I recommend neutral colors and earth tones, it’s not because they’re what’s trending this season. It’s because they never go out of style. Soft shades like cream, ivory, tan, browns, and soft muted earth tones photograph beautifully in every season. Whether we’re exploring a golden field in late summer or surrounded by colorful leaves in the fall, these colors naturally complement the scenery instead of competing with it.
Another reason I love neutral tones is that they’re incredibly flattering on every skin tone. Bright reds, neon colors, or bold shades can reflect onto your skin, making faces appear too red, orange, or washed out. Neutral colors create soft, natural looking skin tones that allow your family’s expressions to shine. Years from now, your photos will still feel timeless because your eye will be drawn to the people in the image rather than the clothing.
Skip the Busy Patterns
Here’s my professional opinion, mixed with a little tough love. If your shirt has giant logos, loud graphics, or enough patterns to make your eyes cross, it’s probably better left in the closet. Busy prints have a way of stealing attention from the moments we’re trying to capture. Instead of noticing your child’s smile or the way they’re reaching for your hand, your eyes end up focusing on bold stripes, oversized florals, or busy designs. That’s not exactly the star of the show.
That doesn’t mean everyone has to wear completely solid colors. Soft textures like knit sweaters, linen fabrics, lace details, or subtle patterns add visual interest without overwhelming the image. Those little details create depth while still allowing your family’s love and connection to remain the focus.
Coordinate…Don’t Match
One of the biggest misconceptions about family photos is that everyone should wear the exact same color.
Instead, think about choosing a color palette that works together. When everyone’s outfits complement one another rather than match perfectly, the final gallery feels much more natural and elevated. Your family still looks cohesive, but each person’s personality gets to shine through.

Dress for Movement
One thing many families don’t realize before their session is that we won’t be standing in one place smiling at the camera the entire time. We’ll be walking, playing, cuddling, chasing little ones, tossing kids in the air, and probably making a few ridiculous animal noises if that’s what it takes to get genuine smiles.
Because my sessions focus on connection rather than stiff poses, it’s important to wear clothing that allows you to move comfortably. Flowy dresses, cozy sweaters, soft fabrics, and outfits that fit well make it much easier to relax and enjoy the experience. When you’re comfortable, it shows in your photos…and relaxed families always photograph better.

Here’s something most people don’t think about until after they receive their gallery…where are these photos going to live? Rather than your eye being pulled toward bright colors or trendy prints, you’ll notice the people and emotions in each photograph. The Best Outfit Is One You Feel Good In
