Does your little one have a first birthday coming up? This is a milestone worth celebrating, and what better way than with a studio session to capture those precious moments forever? Before you head to your 1-year session, here are 8 things you should know:

1. Timing is key

Plan your session during a time of day when your baby is usually well-rested and content. Avoid scheduling it too close to naptime or mealtime to ensure a happy and cooperative little model. I highly recommend the morning!!

2. Dress them comfortably

It’s best to prioritize your baby’s comfort over fancy or elaborate outfits. Choose clothing that allows them to move freely and showcases their personality. Simple and timeless outfits in whites or soft earth tones tend to look best in photos.

3. Embrace candid moments

One-year-olds are full of energy and curiosity. Instead of trying for rigid poses, try to relax and embrace playfulness with your little one during the session. Your photographer will help you with this! Candid shots capture genuine emotions and bring out your baby’s unique personality. You might be surprised at how much you love the candid images in your gallery!

4. Bring their favorite toys

Familiar objects help your baby feel at ease in the studio setting. Consider bringing a couple favorite toys or blankets to provide comfort and familiarity during the session. These cherished items can also add a personal touch to the photographs if you’d like them included. Most studio photographers like myself keep a few fun and aesthetic toys on hand too if you want something to keep them entertained but don’t necessarily want their “well loved” (read: worn and stained) toy or blanket ending up in all of the photos.

5. Snacks and drinks

A well-fed baby is a happy baby! Bring along some light snacks and drinks to keep your little one energized and content throughout the session. Make sure to avoid messy or stain-prone foods to keep their outfits picture-perfect.

6. Patience is key

Photography sessions can sometimes take longer than expected, especially when working with young children. Be patient and don’t worry if you need to take a break for a little bit. Most photographers plan timing for their sessions with this in mind. Remember, the best shots often come from those spontaneous moments. If your child isn’t sure about being in front of the camera at first just take things at their pace and let them do their thing for a while. You’ll end up with some precious shots of them playing naturally!

7. Involve the family

A 1-year studio session doesn’t have to focus solely on the baby. Include the whole family in some shots to create lasting memories together. Siblings, parents, and even fur babies can be part of the fun!

8. Trust your photographer

Choose a photographer who aligns with your vision for your little one’s session. Discuss your preferences and ideas before the session, but also trust their expertise. They have the skills and creativity to capture beautiful moments you’ll cherish forever.

Remember, this session is about celebrating your baby’s first year. Embrace the joy, love, and happiness that fill your heart and let your photographer freeze those precious moments in time.
