Everything you need to know to help get you and your little ones ready for your family photos without going insane.

Let’s be real—getting kids out the door on time is already a challenge. Add in coordinating outfits, brushing hair (without a meltdown), and trying to keep them clean for more than five minutes, and preparing for a family photo session can feel like a high-stakes mission.

But don’t worry—I’ve seen it all, and I promise there’s a way to make the process smoother (and dare I say, even enjoyable?). As a family photographer based in the Minnesota area, I’ve helped countless families navigate the chaos of picture day, and I’m here to share a few simple routines to make getting ready for your session less stressful and more fun.

1. Plan Outfits in Advance (Like, Way in Advance)

The last thing you want is a wardrobe crisis an hour before your session. And let’s be real…planning for Minnesota weather can be tricky for those perfect family photo sessions. Pick out outfits at least a week before to avoid any last-minute “I hate this shirt” tantrums.

✔ Lay everything out (yes, including socks and shoes—because somehow, those always disappear).

✔ Do a quick fit check—make sure nothing’s too tight, too itchy, or suddenly “not my favorite” (because kids).

✔ Choose backup outfits in case of unexpected spills, diaper blowouts, or a rogue peanut butter attack.

Bonus tip: Stick with neutral, timeless colors so your photos look classic and cohesive. If you’re unsure what works best, I’ve got plenty of outfit inspiration for you to check out!

2. Get Everyone Ready in the Right Order

Pro tip: Kids have a magical ability to get messy within seconds. So when it’s time to get dressed, follow this order:

First – Mom! You’re the one making sure everyone else is ready, so get yourself dressed and camera-ready first. (Because if you save yourself for last, you’ll be throwing on mascara in the car.)

Second – Older kids! They can entertain themselves somewhat while you finish up.

Last – Baby/Toddlers! Minimize the amount of time they have to drool, spit up, or snack on something that will instantly stain their outfit.

If you’re worried about keeping outfits clean, wait until the last possible minute to put on shoes and jackets—especially if your child believes puddles were put on this Earth just for them.

3. Give Yourself Way More Time Than You Think You Need

If you think it’ll take 30 minutes to get out the door, double it. Someone will need a last-minute diaper change, someone else will have an emotional breakdown over a sock seam, and you’ll probably have to find a lost shoe (or five).

Set a “fake” leaving time so you have a cushion for unexpected delays (aka, toddler negotiations).

4. Keep the Energy Positive (Even If You’re Stressed)

Kids pick up on our vibes. If you’re stressed, they’ll feel it. Instead of frantically yelling, “WE’RE GOING TO BE LATE!” (been there), try to make the process fun:

✔ Play upbeat music while getting ready.

✔ Turn things into a race (“Who can put on their shoes the fastest?”).

✔ Offer a small reward after the session (ice cream bribes totally count).

The more relaxed you are, the better they’ll do in front of the camera!

5. Pack a Small “Emergency Kit”

A few essentials can save the day if things go sideways. Toss these into a small bag:

✔ Baby wipes (because, well… kids)

✔ Extra outfits (just in case)

✔ Snacks (nothing too messy)

✔ A favorite small toy (to help keep little ones happy)

✔ Lip gloss/powder for last-minute touch-ups

And most importantly, don’t forget water—because somehow, photoshoots make kids suddenly dehydrated.

6. Embrace the Chaos (It’s Part of the Fun!)

Even with the best planning, something will go off-script—and that’s okay! Some of the best moments happen when kids are just being themselves.

If your toddler refuses to sit still or your preschooler makes silly faces, don’t stress—I’ll be there to capture the real moments, the laughter, and the love. Because as a family photographer, I know that perfectly posed is overrated—but genuine moments? Those are priceless.

7. Give Yourself Grace

At the end of the day, family photos aren’t about perfection—they’re about capturing your family, exactly as you are. Whether your kid shows up with slightly messy hair or insists on bringing their favorite stuffed animal, those little details make your photos real and meaningful.

So take a deep breath, follow these simple routines, and get ready to freeze this beautiful, messy season of life in photos you’ll cherish forever.
