There’s literally nothing sweeter than getting to capture precious photos of a brand new babe with their family. My job will never ever get old (yes it makes baby fever an actual problem haha). As a studio newborn & family photographer, one of the questions I get asked most often is when should I schedule my newborn session for?
If you’re currently expecting (congrats!!) and thinking about booking that newborn session but are feeling unsure of how and when to schedule, keep reading to see what I recommend for my clients as well as what to do if you need to reschedule.
I always recommend scheduling newborn photos within baby’s first two weeks of life. This timeframe is going to be best for getting all those perfect cuddly newborn shots! Here’s why:
During those first couple weeks, babies are sleeping more deeply and more often, so it’s much easier to get them all swaddled and in those classic, adorable newborn poses.
Once baby is closer to that 1 month old mark (and older), they are more alert and it can be harder to get them into (and to stay in) poses. This limits the amount of cute wrapped up shots we can get!
P.S want to see more adorable swaddled newborn photos like these? It’s basically all I post about over on the ‘gram. Make sure to follow me on Instagram if you aren’t already!
Most baby acne doesn’t come in until they are closer to 2-4 weeks old. This makes those first couple weeks of life the perfect time for photos because we can capture their nice smooth skin!
This isn’t always the case though…sometimes babies can have some skin issues right from birth. If your newborn does have some acne or flaking when it comes time for their session, don’t stress! I am a pro at editing that right out.
As babies get older and are hitting more growth stages, they can tend to be more fussy and their sleep/wake cycles are a little less predictable.
As an experienced newborn & family photographer (who does sessions with crazy, energetic toddlers on a regular basis 🤪) there isn’t anything I haven’t seen before! Even if your little one is having a rough day, we will still have a great session and get tons of adorable photos.
But with that being said, I recommend aiming to have your newborn session within those first two weeks because your baby will most likely sleep through most of the session. And this means a smoother, less stressful experience for parents!
Babies grow SO fast! You blink and they are turning one already?! This is just another reason why I love doing newborn sessions around that 2 week mark. This is the perfect timing because they have that squishy little newborn look and we can capture those precious newborn moments between you and your baby for you to look back on for years to come.
Babies really do have their own schedule. And they don’t always like to show up on time! If your little one doesn’t come right on his or her due date, don’t worry! I always leave plenty of flexibility in my weekday schedule for this exact reason. If baby arrives earlier than expected, is running late, or if there are any other factors where we need to reschedule your session, I am always able to accommodate and move things around as necessary!
I always recommend reaching out sooner than later to book your session. Most newborn family photographers like myself are booked out months in advance. For newborn sessions, reach out to me anytime after your first trimester to schedule! Ready to get your newborn session on the calendar?
