Congratulations on welcoming your new little addition into the world! The newborn season is so precious and goes by SO stinking fast. Which is why selecting a newborn photographer is such a big deal! You’re going to treasure these photos for years and years to come and look back and wonder how they were ever that tiny squishy little baby.
When it comes to choosing a newborn photographer, take your time and don’t be afraid to ask them questions!! You want to find a photographer who is the perfect fit for you and your family (we’re talking more than just loving their editing style). As someone who has been in the world of newborn photography for several years now, I’ve learned the questions that are the most important to ask to help you find the perfect person. Keep reading for the top 4 questions you should make sure to ask when choosing your newborn photographer!
Looking through a photographer’s Instagram posts or portfolio page on their website is a great way to narrow down your options and find a photographer who’s style you really love! But before booking a session, I recommend reaching out and asking to see a full gallery from one of their recent newborn sessions. This will give you a better idea of the full variety of photos you will get from working with them, and can give you more clarity on if they are the best fit for what you are looking for when it comes to your newborn photos!

Are you dreaming of a studio newborn session or an in-home one? Make sure to ask your potential newborn photographer what options they offer! Many newborn photographers (myself included) specialize in studio photography, but actually offer in-home sessions as well – they just don’t market it as much! This applies vise versa as well. So you won’t know all of your options unless you ask!
Every newborn photographer prices their sessions differently. If they offer both studio and in-home options, make sure to ask for pricing details and info on what’s included for each. Often times in-home session options may come with travel fees, and you may have to provide more of the props and details compared to a studio session.
What type of newborn photos do you find yourself loving most? The classic posed shots of baby all snuggled up in a cute wrap? Or do you prefer more candid shots that focus on natural interactions between mom, dad, and baby? Make sure to find a photographer who’s style aligns with what you love! The best way to do this is by asking your newborn photographer if they focus more on posed or lifestyle shots.
There are some newborn photographers like myself who prefer a blend of both lifestyle and posed. For my newborn sessions, I like to add aspects of each to create a unique style that is the best of both worlds! I have a few key poses I like to put newborns in, but I take a more natural approach and really focus on capturing more candid shots and relaxed interactions between you and your baby.
Not all newborn photographers include printing rights along with their galleries, so it’s important to check! If printing rights are not included, you will need to order prints through their gallery platform or website. I personally recommend doing this anyway because the quality is always 100 times better than getting them printed through places like Target or Walgreens. But it is an added cost to consider when booking your photographer!
Many photographers like myself include printing rights for all newborn sessions, but also have the option to conveniently order high quality prints online via your gallery platform. This way YOU get to choose how you print your photos!
