Hey photographers! This one’s for you. Whether you are just starting out in newborn photography and still experimenting and trying to find your style, or are a seasoned newborn photog looking for some fresh posing ideas, I got you!
I’ve put together a list of my top 10 simple posing ideas for newborn studio sessions below. I have tried many different poses over the years (some were wayyy more awkward than others and it’s safe to say we will NEVER be bringing those back lol), but these are my tried and true favs.
As a studio photographer, my personal style when it comes to newborn family sessions is a combination between traditional posed and lifestyle, so these posing ideas will reflect that! During my newborn sessions I love getting babe all wrapped up for those classic curled-up poses. But I also love keeping my prompts simple and flexible to allow for more natural and candid moments as well. I encourage you to modify these posing ideas to fit your unique photography style!
I usually stick with a combination of these 10 poses for my newborn family sessions because they are all suuuper simple prompts that only need minimal direction yet look great no matter the subject.
Another reason I love these posing ideas is because they look great at multiple different angles…the possibilities are endless honestly, and you’ll end up getting multiple images that look completely different from the exact same prompt. Plus it means less time arranging your sweet newborn fam and more time capturing adorable photos which is always a bonus. In addition to examples of each posing idea, I’ve added some images showing my personal favorite angles to capture for each to give you even more inspo.
Side note: if you haven’t already invested in cute, quality furniture for your studio, I highly recommend! I recently bought this beautiful cream white lounge piece for my studio and it instantly elevated my sessions…I’m quite literally obsessed. Most of the prompts I’ve listed below work super well whether the family is standing or sitting, which will give you some added variety from session to session!
